Just few minutes into the New Year, an assistant sales representatives with The Nation Newspapers in Ibadan, Mr Timothy Adeosun has been crushed to death by a vehicle at Salvation Army Road Ibadan. The incident, which Daily Sun learnt occurred at about 1am also left Adeosun’s colleague and sales representative of ThisDay Newspapers, Mr Juwon Babalola, severely injured.
Adeosun was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan where he gave up the ghost.
The death of the newspaper salesman affected newspapers distribution in Ibadan yesterday as several vendors and agents, who could not bear the loss momentarily abandoned their work.
It was learnt that the two victims, who rode on a motorcycle, were returning from a church service to usher in the new yearwhen the driver of a vehicle skidded off his lane and rammed into them, leaving the two victims severely injured. They were said to have been rushed to nearby private hospitals but could not be treated due to the severity of the injuries.
Adeosun was said to be bleeding profusely before his rescuers rushed him to UCH where he died shortly after.
His corpse had since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
The driver of the car, who was said to be a young boy, drove a brown Acura Legend car 3.2TL marked Lagos FKJ 894 DC belonging to Spin Pre-Varsity.
The Divisional Transport Officer (DTO) at Mokola Divisional Police Station, Mr Oyelowo Asimiyu confirmed the incident, saying the driver of the car was already in their custody.
He said from their investigation, the driver of the Acura car left his lane and drove to the other lane where the deceased and his friend were hit and thrown into a ditch, leading to Adeosun’s death shortly after.
Speaking on the development, Chairman, Ibadan chapter of the Newspapers Distributors Association of Nigeria (NDAN), Mr. Babatunde Abimbola (a.k.a. Ambassador) said he was called at about 1:30am that Timothy Adeosun had an accident and that it was a fatal one.
He said: “Surprisingly, sympathizers offered assistance to take Adeosun to nearby hospitals but was rejected. Not only that, the boy, along with Babalola were writhing in pains as about seven hospitals rejected them until they were eventually admitted to A&E of UCH, Ibadan after much pleas.”
Ambassador said over 30 agents and vendors, who stormed the Oke Padre distribution centre turned down the newspapers on hearing of the sad demise of Adeosun. Many news stands in Ibadan were without the two national dailies yesterday.
